DUCTILE YSTERPYPE & -BEWEGINGS

We offer ductile iron pipe and fitting solutions for the entire water transport cycle

Why Ductile Iron

The mechanical properties of ductile iron are markedly superior to those of grey iron and more comparable to the properties of steel pipes. The much-improved properties were recognized to be of particular benefit in the centrifugal pipe industry and as such the majority of potable water projects, worldwide, use ductile iron.

Ductile iron has the tensile strength, yield strength and module of elasticity that are comparable with steel pipe.

Ductile iron pipes and fittings are easy to assemble and are not subject to weather conditions.  The installation does not require sophisticated equipment and workers only require basic training.

The pipes and fittings also satisfy the highest hygienic standards. Drinking water and ground water are protected by pipe walls which seal against diffusion. The pipes and fittings are designed to easily withstand pressures much greater than those usually encountered in water networks.

Service time is up to 60 years with the materials unaffected. However, there are some pipes which have been known to last 80-90 years.

Ductile Iron is environmentally friendly. Pipes are sustainable and recyclable, and the materials used are inorganic.

Both deep and shallow top covers are possible. The pipes are suitable for all soils and laying methods.

When using ductile iron there is no need for changing of soils or additional bedding for the pipes, and the soils excavated can be re-used.

Major savings of time and money can be made due to soil excavation not requiring to be transported away.

Coatings & Linings

Ductile iron pipes and fittings have high corrosion resistance, are lined with cement or resins, and usually coated with zinc plus bitumen paint, which solves the problems of corrosion that grey iron pipes or steel pipes can’t solve.

For ductile iron pipes, standard Portland cement mortar lining according to ISO4179 is the most common in the market and usually meets the projects' requirements. Blast furnace cement, sulphate-resistant cement and high alumina cement can also be used according to client requirements. High alumina cement mortar lining and sulphate-resistant cement mortar lining are especially applicable to inner anti-corrosion for sewage pipes, improving the resistance to erosion from the sewage components.

Polyurethane lining is also available. It is solvent free and consists of 100% polyurethane solids which have very good corrosion resistance. This is partly attributed to its smooth surface, so it has small resistance when liquid is passing through. It can be used to transport drinking water or sewage.

Ceramic epoxy lining as well as bitumen paint is also available depending on the product and size.

For external coatings the most common for ductile iron is standard zinc + bitumen according to ISO8179. Zinc is a proven pipeline coating system used throughout the world for more than 30 years and provides adequate protection against most soil conditions.

Other coatings available include zinc rich paint with a finishing layer in accordance with ISO8179-2, bitumen paint with a dry film thickness of no less than 70 microns, polyethylene sleeves in accordance with ISO8180, Polyurethane, thicker options for metallic zinc with finishing layer or epoxy.

Joints

The connections of Ductile Iron pipes are usually push-on joints or gland mechanical joints with rubber gaskets which have good leak prevention and ductility. No welding is required. The designed deflection is 3~5 °, so the number of fittings required can be reduced.

There are various types of joints for Ductile Iron pipes and fittings, each type are dependent on dimensions or specific client requirements. The main types are push on (T type), K type, self-anchored or flanged.

The push on (T type) utilizes a single rubber sealing gasket assuring a tight, permanent seal. This type joint is easy to assemble, eliminates the need for fasteners and is also fast to install. The rubber gasket fits inside the contour of the bell socket. The plain-end (spigot) of each pipe is bevelled to further ease assembly.

The K type, mechanical joint is a bolted joint utilizing a Ductile Iron gland and mechanical joint gasket. The mechanical joint is used for water service where many connections are required. All components of the mechanical joint are interchangeable. The spigot end of mechanical joint pipe has the same outside diameter as the push-on joint pipe. As a result, it can be fitted into such joints in the field by bevelling the outside edge.

Self-restrained Type is a push-in self anchored joint. The principle of joint anchoring consists in transmitting the axial forces from one pipeline to the following one, thus ensuring that the joint does not come apart. Self-restrained joints combine the advantages of flexible joint pipes and welded joint pipes. Self-anchored joints allow the axial thrusts arising at particular points (bends, tapers, tees, blank flanges) to be distributed over one or more pipes, thus avoiding installation of concrete anchor blocks.
